MyCalamari is a self-guided city exploration app that turns sightseeing into a game. Instead of a conventional guidebook, each tour is built from location-based challenges and stories, so discovering a city feels like playing rather than checking landmarks off a list.
The main engineering challenge was making the app reliable in the field, where connectivity is unpredictable. Location handling, challenge unlocking and progress tracking were all built so a user never gets stuck mid-tour because of a weak signal.
Behind the app sits a custom content management system where the operator can create new tours, edit locations, challenges and copy on their own, with no developer involvement.
